n8n Business Automations
Lead routing, list hygiene and support triage as importable workflows
View the repositoryContext
A lot of back-office work is repetitive and error-prone: validating and routing inbound leads, keeping lists clean before sends, triaging support requests against response-time expectations. The usual automation demos that circulate publicly are toys, happy-path chains with no validation, no error branches and hardcoded credentials, which is precisely why businesses distrust them in production.
This set of importable n8n workflows is built production-shaped instead: schema validation at the gate, live DNS enrichment, deterministic routing, dedicated error-handling branches, SLA tracking and scheduled sweeps, all running on synthetic data with zero credentials, so anyone can import them, execute them and inspect every node's logic. Public on GitHub, running live on the OLDEV n8n instance.
The Challenge
- Public workflow JSON usually leaks its origin, these had to be built synthetic-first, credential-free, yet still demonstrate real engineering.
- Automations fail at the edges: malformed payloads, unreachable APIs, empty datasets, the error paths had to be designed, not left to chance.
- Routing decisions had to be deterministic and explainable, "why did this lead go to this owner" must have one answer.
- SLA tracking needs elapsed-time state per ticket, which means the workflows had to persist and re-derive timing data across runs, not just react to single events.
Scope and Approach
-
01
Lead routing workflow
Validates inbound payloads at the webhook gate against an expected schema, normalizes and enriches them, de-duplicates against existing records and assigns owners round-robin. Rejects fail fast with a logged reason, a malformed lead never travels half the pipeline before dying silently.
-
02
List hygiene workflow
Buckets a contact list into clean, risky and suppress tiers and scores the sending domain as a deliverability pre-flight, the same gate a professional runs before any bulk send touches a list.
-
03
Lead intelligence workflow
Runs live DNS and domain fingerprinting to score and classify inbound leads, with a dedicated error-handling branch so upstream failures degrade gracefully into flagged records instead of silently dropped ones.
-
04
Support triage workflow
Classifies, enriches, routes and SLA-tracks inbound tickets, with a scheduled daily sweep and digest, escalation driven by elapsed-time data rather than whoever shouts loudest in the inbox.

Technical Deep Dive
Validation at the gate
Every workflow front-loads its checks: schema shape, required fields, type sanity. The design principle is that bad input should die at node two with a reason, not at node fourteen with a stack trace, the property that separates automations you can trust from automations you babysit.
Error branches as first-class paths
Each external dependency, DNS lookups, HTTP calls, has an explicit failure route that tags the record and continues the run. One unreachable API degrades one enrichment field instead of killing the batch.
Synthetic but honest
The data is generated and the credentials are absent, but the logic is the real thing, the same routing, hygiene and triage patterns deployed in client engagements, importable and runnable by anyone evaluating the work.
Round-robin with sticky ownership
Owner assignment rotates deterministically but respects existing ownership: a returning lead routes to its prior owner instead of re-entering the rotation. Fair distribution for new work, continuity for existing relationships, the two requirements every sales team actually has, encoded in one branch.
The daily sweep as a safety net
Event-driven triage misses whatever arrives while a webhook endpoint hiccups. The scheduled daily sweep re-scans for unprocessed and SLA-breaching items and folds them back into the pipeline, the reconciliation pattern that turns a demo automation into one a business can rely on.
Fingerprinting a domain from the outside
The lead-intelligence workflow reads what public DNS volunteers: MX records reveal the mail provider, SPF includes reveal the sending stack, and together they classify a lead's infrastructure maturity before any human looks at it, enrichment from data nobody has to ask for.
Engineering Decisions
Hand-written workflow JSON
The workflows are authored as clean, native n8n JSON, reviewable in a diff, importable without surprises, free of the artifacts that exported production workflows carry.
Four focused workflows over one mega-flow
Each workflow does one job with one trigger surface. Composability beats spectacle: a business adopts the hygiene gate without inheriting the triage system.
Zero credentials as a distribution requirement
Anything requiring API keys to demonstrate is a demo nobody runs. Building the workflows credential-free, synthetic generators in place of live sources, means an evaluator imports and executes in minutes, which is the entire point of a public reference.
Results
- Four importable workflows covering lead routing, list hygiene, lead intelligence and support triage.
- Schema validation, deterministic routing and dedicated error branches, production-shaped, not demo-shaped.
- Runs on synthetic data with zero credentials, import, execute and inspect every node.
- Live on a production n8n instance and public on GitHub as a reference for real automation engineering.
